Plumbing Problems You Should Never Ignore

toilet-plumbing-concerned-womanWe could make this a short blog post and simply write, “All of them!” Because it’s true: if you even suspect your household plumbing is experiencing a problem, no matter how small it may be, you should pay attention to it. Most of the time that means calling on professionals for plumbing repairs.

However, we want to spotlight a few specific problems that homeowners might ignore with their plumbing—and which they definitely shouldn’t. Each of these concerns could end up turning into much more expensive repairs or even trouble with water damage and a complete loss of running water. With professional plumbers like ours only a call away, there’s no reason to delay repair work.

I. Regular drain clogging

When a single drain develops a clog, it isn’t always necessary to call on a plumber. You can use a plunger or a hand-cranked drain snake to attempt to clear it. For simple clogs, this may be all that’s necessary, and you’ll only need to call for drain cleaning from professional plumbers if these methods don’t work. (Never use chemical drain cleaners, however!)

If a drain is clogging repeatedly, or more than one drain is clogging at once, you’re looking at a more serious plumbing issue. It may be a clog deep down in the piping, possibly even the sewer line itself, or a heavy buildup of deposits requiring professional drain cleaning techniques to remove.

II. Low water pressure

The water coming from faucets around the house is lower than normal. This sometimes happens because of problems in the municipal system, so check if your neighbors are experiencing anything similar. If they are, the trouble should soon pass. But if it persists or it doesn’t appear to be a municipal problem, you may have major leaks occurring in the house (including a burst pipe) or blockage in the water main.

III. A burst pipe

You may believe that burst pipes are only an issue for colder climates where it’s possible for pipes to freeze. This isn’t true! Florida homes can suffer from burst pipes for a number of reasons, such as corrosion, root infiltration (a common issue for sewer lines), old pipe materials, and landslides or construction that shifts the ground. The moment you think you’ve got a burst pipe, shut off the water in your home immediately (always know where the shut-off valve for the water main is) and then call for professionals.

IV. Water stains on the ceiling

A reddish-brown discoloration on the drywall of the ceiling isn’t just an eyesore. It’s a warning of a pipe leak from above. This is particularly worrying if the room overhead is a bathroom, which contains a high concentration of plumbing. If there is leaking occurring in a bathroom’s plumbing, the potential for extensive and expensive water damage is high, and might even result in floor collapse. Have plumbers look into the staining right away.
