Plumbing Question: Why Should You Get a Whole House Water Filter?

Monday, October 15th, 2012

Most of us have heard about whole house water filters by now. But what exactly are the actual benefits to whole house water filtration systems? We’ve put together a quick list of some of the benefits to having a water filtration system installed in your Orlando home. This should provide some great information for you as you begin to make this decision.

How Does a Whole House Water Filter Work?

A whole house filter differs from other water filters in that it actually filters all the water entering the house—not just the water that you drink. This means that the water you shower in, the water you wash your dishes with and the water you drink are all filtered. A whole house water filter is installed by a professional Orlando plumber in line with the main water supply line coming from either your well or from the city. Water passes through the filter and goes into your home.

Removes Unwanted Minerals from Water

Mineral build up can be the cause of expensive repairs in home appliances like water heaters, washing machines and dishwashers. A whole house water filter can remove or greatly reduce the amount of minerals that are in your water. This keeps them from building up inside your appliances and causing blockages and clogs.

If you have any questions about whether or not a whole house water filter is right for your Orlando  home, then call Modern Plumbing Industries, Inc. (MPI). Our plumbers can answer any questions you might have.

Plumber’s Guide: Low Flow Fixture Benefits

Monday, October 8th, 2012

Between washing dishes, doing laundry and showering you use quite a bit of water in your day to day life. Why not use that water more efficiently? It’s good for the environment and can also help you save money. Modern Plumbing Industries, Inc. has some information about the benefits that low flow water fixtures can provide. If conserving water while still enjoy the comfort and convenience you’re used to sounds like an option you’re interested in, consider the installation of low flow fixtures in your Orlando home.

First and foremost, low flow water fixtures save water and money. A great advantage to low flow fixtures is the fact that, unlike replacing a heating and cooling system with a newer, more efficient model, low flow fixtures allow you to cut down on bills without making a big investment. Consider a low flow shower head. Shower’s account for around 20% of indoor water use, and up to 50% of your home’s hot water consumption. With an old shower head you can be using as much as 8 gallons of water each minute in the shower. Low flow shower heads, on the other hand, are capable of providing ample showering water flow while reducing water use to 1.5-2.5 gallons per minute. The water is dispersed into small droplets, increasing velocity while reducing overall water usage.

A simple aerator on your sink faucets are another great way to save water in your home. Old faucets used as much as 7 gallons of water per minute. With a new aerator, which incorporates air into your water flow, that amount of water can be reduced to 2.5 gallons per minute. These simple devices allow you all the water pressure and power you need for dish washing while greatly reducing the actual amount of water you use.

If you’re interested enough to make a bit more of an investment in order to reduce water usage, a low flow toilet installation is a great way to do so. It may cost more than a new shower head, but consider the fact that, with an old toilet, you may be using up to 40% of your indoor water just flushing your toilet. A new, low flow toilet can drop that amount to just over 1.5 gallons per flush. The potential savings on water costs can help to offset the initial investment, and you enjoy the same comfort and convenience as before while making your home more eco-friendly.

The Orlando plumbers at Modern Plumbing Industries, Inc. are available to answer any questions you may have about the installation of low flow fixtures in your home. Call us today for more information. We’re glad to share our expertise with you to ensure you make the best decisions for your home water usage.

Plumbing Guide: How Professional Drain Cleaning Works

Monday, October 1st, 2012

Most Orlando homeowners, when they think about drain cleaning, think only of a plunger or a bottle of drano being used to take out a small hair or grease clog in the trap. But many clogs are much bigger than this. They can be deeper in the pipes or they may simply be resistant to plunging and you should never use chemicals due to the damage they can cause. Here is a quick look at the professional grade drain cleaning options that are available and the benefits they offer to those who can’t quite plunge it clear.

 Evaluating the Clog

The first step when an Orlando plumber arrives at your home for professional drain cleaning is to evaluate your clog and determine what steps will be best to handle it. This means checking the age of the pipes, the scope of the clog itself and what drains are affected. One of the many advances in clog detection technology in recent years is video pipe inspection. This allows a plumber to see directly inside your pipes and find both the clog and the reason it developed.

Specific Options for Drain Cleaning

Once a clog has been identified, the removal process can begin. Snaking is the simplest and often most effective for fixture based clogs, but there are other options as well. For example, though rarely if ever are chemicals or other compounds used, even organic compounds for sewer cleaning. High speed jetting may be used for light clogs and build up in the pipes, and if the problem is severe enough, direct access to the pipe may be needed, but the video pipe inspection can help with this.

Many shallow clogs can be removed by a homeowner with a plunger or even a simple snake, but if you have a deeper clog and can’t quite remove it, there are much more powerful, professional-grade options available for you and your drainage system. Call Modern Plumbing Industries, Inc. today to learn more about Orlando plumbing repairs.
