Plumbing Question: What is Drain Vent Repair?

Monday, August 27th, 2012

Drain vents are an essential part of all plumbing systems.  They equalize the air pressure in a drain line, allowing air to flow through the pipe as well as water.  Modern Plumbing Industries, Inc. has a team of professional plumbers in Winter Springs who handle drain vent repairs and can help you understand them a little bit better.

Plumbing drain vents perform some key functions.  They allow air to escape from waste water pipes as the waste water pushes it along.  They permit air into the waste pipes so that waste water is not hindered by low air pressure.  They prevent the siphon affect from occurring when water fixtures are used.  They safely dispose of stinky sewer odors through a roof vent rather than the odor being trapped and entering a building.

So what causes the need for a drain vent repair?

If you begin to smell sewer gas in your building there could be a drain vent problem.  Hearing a gurgling sound during drainage means there is a bad venting pipe or clogged drain.  This happens because air cannot be properly vented through the plumbing vent and instead is being sucked in through the drainage pipes.

Plumbing vents that accidentally get blocked or closed off or leaking plumbing vents that are not properly sealed can cause problems with your plumbing system.  There can also be plumbing vent stack leaks inside the walls of a building when initial installation is not completed properly and pipes become disjointed.  Each of these problems needs professional service to be repaired properly.

The qualified plumbers at Modern Plumbing Industries, Inc. are ready to help you with all your drain vent repairs in Winter Springs, no matter how they happened, and no matter what they are.  Contact Modern Plumbing Industries today!

Plumbing Tip: What You Should Know About Video Pipe Inspection

Monday, August 20th, 2012

Technological advances in video pipe inspection techniques and equipment have allowed Orlando plumbers to detect problems within drain and sewer systems without damaging the customer’s property.  Modern Plumbing Industries, Inc. (MPI) is proud to offer the latest in video inspection technologies, and we want to be the plumbing company you call for your next plumbing inspection in Orlando.

Video Pipe Inspection Basics

When our plumbers come to look at your drain and sewer system, the easiest and least invasive way to determine the cause and find the right solution is with a video pipe inspection.  Many plumbing problems occur in locations where physical access is limited, such as underground or behind walls. These locations would require ripping out walls or digging up huge sections of the yard and landscaping just to find the problem.

With video pipe inspection, our plumbers can pinpoint the issue more accurately and quickly. Not only does this decrease the overall cost of the repair, but it can also help ensure that we get your system working again quickly so that you can get back to your daily routine. We can also make sure there are no other hidden issues and test your system to ensure that everything is working properly.

During video pipe inspection, a tiny camera is placed inside the drain leading to the pipe where you’re having a problem. The video camera is connected to a monitor via a wireless connection so that our plumbers can easily see the condition of the inside of the pipe. More common problems include shifted joints, holes or cracks in the pipe, blockages caused by waste or roots growing into the pipe. Once we locate the issue, then we can determine the best way to resolve it, which will also provide a better approximation of the overall cost of the repair.

Let the Orlando plumbing professionals at Modern Plumbing Industries, Inc. (MPI) provide you with a video pipe inspection. Contact us today!

Plumbing Question: Why Does My House Run Out of Hot Water?

Monday, August 13th, 2012

Running out of hot water is never fun, especially when you are in a hurry and need it to finish your morning preparations for the day.  As Orlando plumbing specialistsModern Plumbing Industries, Inc. we can help you understand the main reasons why the hot water runs out.

Reasons the Hot Water Runs Out

As everyone knows, hot water is created for us by our water heaters.  The type and size of water heater that is present in a building will directly relate to how quickly the hot water runs out.  If the hot water heater is too small for the standard uses within a home or a business such as a restaurant, it can mean frequently running out of hot water and having to wait for it to be heated once again.

Different household tasks use up differing amounts of hot water.  A typical five-minute shower takes up 12 gallons of hot water.  A load of laundry typically takes from 9-12 gallons of hot water on the standard warm wash and warm rinse cycle (depending on the size of the washing machine).  A load of dishes in the dishwasher can use anywhere from 8 to 10 gallons of hot water.  If you only have a 30 gallon tank water heater then doing any of these things at the same time can mean the hot water runs out quickly.

It could also be that the dip tube on the cold water inlet on the hot water heater is broken or has worn out.  The result would be not being able to use the water near the bottom of the tank, which means you are losing a good portion of your water heating capacity.

On electric water heaters the heating elements could have gone out.  Resetting them will generally solve this problem, but if it does not it means something more serious has occurred and a water heater replacement may be necessary.

Improper insulation on a water heater can mean that heat loss from the water heater tank is causing the water temperature to fluctuate too often, resulting in not enough hot water.

Sediment buildup within a water heater can decrease how well the water is heated and how well it stays hot.  Excess sediment creates a big problem, and proper water heater flushing should be done during your annual professional water heater maintenance.

Let us help you solve your hot water problems in Orlando, whether they are due to a hot water heater that is too small, broken or worn parts, improper insulation or sediment buildup.  No matter what the reasons are that the hot water runs out, Modern Plumbing Industries, Inc. (MPI)  can help you get an ample supply of hot water once again.

Plumbing Guide: Environmentally-Friendly Plumbing

Monday, August 6th, 2012

As the green movement gains momentum, no industry wants to be left behind. Plumbing is no exception, and that’s why there has been so much environmentally-friendly innovation in the field recently. If you’re interested in making your Orlando home’s plumbing system more ecologically sound but don’t know where to begin, Modern Plumbing Industries, Inc. is here share some knowledge with you. The best way to reduce your home’s footprint is to stay informed. Here are some things to keep in mind when deciding how to improve your Orlando plumbing system.

  • Tankless Water Heaters: Tankless water heaters have been around for a while now, which means that manufacturers have had time to improve on their designs and operation. Remember, efficient plumbing isn’t just about conserving water. Tankless water heaters heat water as it is called for; they don’t have the storage tank usually associated with water heaters. This means they use energy more efficiently, as they don’t have to constantly heat a supply of water, but rather only that water that is being used at the moment.
  • Low Flow Fixtures and Aerators: In accordance with federal regulations, new faucets and showerheads cannot exceed a 2.5 gallons per minute flow rate at a water pressure of 80psi. Aerating shower heads mix air and water to create a misting effect. Laminar-flow showerheads break water flow into individual streams. Both methods save water and, consequently, cut down on your water bills.

There are also aerators on your water faucets. This is the screw-on cap at the end of the faucet. They are inexpensive to replace, and some models come with shut-off valves that allow you to stop water flow without losing the temperature of the water, further boosting efficiency.

  • LEED Rating: The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system sets credible standards for what qualifies as green building. This system aims to reward whole-building approaches to sustainability, taking into consideration elements such as site development, materials used and, of course, water savings. The LEED rating systems ranks buildings as Certified, Silver, Gold or Platinum depending upon the amount of credits they are awarded. When you see an LEED rating on your building, you know that every component, including the plumbing, is living up to high eco-friendly standards.

These are just a few examples to keep in mind when considering the environmental-friendliness of your plumbing system in Orlando . There are a lot of ways that you can achieve your goal of going green. Call  Modern Plumbing Industries, Inc. today to learn more about your options.
